Shoaib Akhtar Survives Car Accident

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar narrowly survived a car accident in Islamabad in the early hours of Sunday, the pacer was returning home from a five-star hotel.

The car of the former quick, known as the Rawalpindi Express, crashed into a concrete block along the side of the road near Prime Minister Secretariat. The incident appears to be a result of over-speeding.

The front portion of the car was badly damaged but Akhtar escaped unharmed, the police also didn't register a case and allowed him to go home after the accident.

Tendulkar was Afraid of Shoaib Akhtar says Shahid Afridi

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has backed Shoiab Akhtar's claims that Sachin Tendulkar was afraid of him. While talking to Pakistani sports channel Geo Super Afridi said:

"Yes I saw Sachin's legs trembling from square leg when Shoaib Akhtar was bowling. He [Tendulkar] was also afraid of facing Saeed Ajmal during the 2011 World Cup Semi Final against Pakistan."

Shoaib Akhtar has faced criticism from Indian fans after claiming in his book " Controversially Yours" that Sachin was scared of him.

According to an excerpt from the book, Shoaib says, “"I bowled (Sachin) a particularly fast ball which he, to my amazement didn't even touch. He walked away! That was the first time I saw him walk away from me-that, too, on the slow track at Faisalabad."

Shoaib Akhtar Won't play Sri Lanka Premier T20 League

Retired Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has pulled out of the Sri Lanka Premier League T20 citing personal reasons.

"My parents are old and I want to spend time with them," said Akhtar talking to ESPNcricinfo. "I also don't want to play or want to be on the ground anymore. I'm not even coming back for a job in cricket or anything, but if some youngster needs my help I'll visit from time to time to help them but no more of this game.

"I want to explore other parts of the world now. I played this game for 18 years and I don't want to spend another 18 years in that scenario anymore. I am going to be involved in charity work from now on."

Akhtar added that he will only return to cricket if a young player needs his help.”I played the game for well over 14 years so now I don’t want to play, but if any youngster needs my help and guidance only then I will step onto the field,” said Akhtar.

Shoaib started his career in 1997 and took 178 wickets in 46 Tests, plus 247 wickets in 163 one-day internationals

Shoaib Akhtar: We Need To Win This World Cup

Shoaib Akhtar has lots of reason to look forward to this World Cup, this is his last World Cup and he wants to go out with a bang. Another reason is his likely duel with long term rival Sachin Tendulkar.

"We all know he is a great player. Every bowler gets hit.

Even Brett Lee gets hit a long way, so I am not worried about being hit for sixes by Tendulkar. I have got him off the first ball too," Akhtar told reporters.

"Not only Sachin, we will try to get other key players early because they can single handedly win matches. Put them under pressure, and get them out early -- that's what I will like to do," added Akhtar.

Speaking about Pakistan chances Shoaib said that the team must win to reclaim its pride after a scandalous year. Three Pakistan player were handed bans after being involved in spot fixing.

Shoaib admitted that Pakistan would miss the banned trio.

"Obviously we are very hurt inside by whatever has happened to us. Pakistan needs to win this Cricket World Cup at any cost. It will bring the charm back for people in Pakistan," said Akhtar.

"We are unfortunate that they are not there. But what can we do now? We have got to move on. I think whatever pace attack we have is good enough to win matches.

"We have the bowlers who can bowl at the death and we can restrict the sides. The main thing is that the ball is going to reverse swing as the match progresses. That is where I think Pakistan's strength lies," he said.

Akhtar also said that he can still bowl consistently at 150/kph despite his age.

"I still bowl 150 kph (93 mph). Obviously when you are 26 and 36, it's a bit different. I will try to do as well as I can with whatever ability I have. I am going to push my limits and give it all to the team."
