5. Marcin Wasilewski
On August 30, 2009, Wasilewski suffered an open leg fracture in the 1-1 draw between Anderlecht and Standard Liege when Liege's Axel Witsel made a challenge. Witsel was red carded for the offence. Wasilewski underwent corrective surgery for open fractures to both the tibia and fibula.After a long rehabilitation, Wasilewski made his return after 9 months on May 8, 2010.

4.Eduardo Da Silva
On 23 February 2008, Arsenal's Eduardo suffered a broken left fibula and an open dislocation of his left ankle in a against Birmingham City, following a tackle by Martin Taylor. Eduardo's injury was so graphic that Sky Sports, which was broadcasting the game live, decided not to show replays of the incident. He returned to action a year later on 16 February 2009.

3. Ewald Linen
Playing in a match for Arminia Bielefeld against Werder Bremen in 1981, Linen suffered this horrific wound to his right thigh after a tackle. The wound was almost 30cm in size, and was deep enough to expose Lienen’s muscle tissue and thighbone. Incredibly, the footage of the incident shows Lienen refusing to stay on the ground to have the wound treated, choosing instead to remonstrate with just about anyone who gets in his way.

2. David Busst
On 8 April 1996, whilst playing for Coventry against Manchester United, 2 minutes into the match, Busst collided with United players Denis Irwin and Brian McClair, resulting in extensive compound fractures to both the tibia and fibula of his right leg.The match had to be delayed for 12 minutes while blood was cleaned off the grass. It is said that Manchester United's goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel vomited on the pitch upon seeing the injury and had to have counselling afterwards, along with a number of other players.Busst's injuries were so bad that at one point he ran the risk of having his leg amputated.While in hospital, Busst contracted MRSA, which caused further damage to the tissue and muscle in the injured part of his leg. Despite having 26 operations, Busst remained a member of the official Coventry squad for a further seven months, but never played again and retired from the game following advice from his doctors on 6 November 1996 at the age of 29.
