Nemanja Vidic Misses Crucial Penalty & Retires From International Football

Nemanja Vidic has played 52 minutes of football for Manchester United this season due to injury. An early return to international football has led to an eventful and poignant night for the Manchester United captain who had hoped to prove himself for the spicy looking trip to Anfield on Saturday lunchtime.

Serbia were behind to a wonder free-kick goal by Dare Vrsic, when they were awarded a penalty and Nemanja Vidic stepped up having scored a solitary two goals in 57 caps for his national team.

The miss and subsequent defeat ensured Serbia came third in Group C with Estonia sneaking into the play-off spot. A single goal would have been enough for Serbia to go through.

Initial reports floating around the interweb suggest Nemanja Vidic has given up international football, presumably in a bid to secure a return to Sir Alex Ferguson’s first team.

Dejan Stankovic also announced his retirement and with Vidic a full four years younger than the Inter Milan midfielder at 29, surely he will have a crack at Brazil 2014.

Vidic joins Manchester United team mates such as Ryan Giggs, Dimitar Berbatov in international retirement whilst it has mostly been Rio Ferdinand that has been painted as the washed up veteran.
