What is a "Timeless" Test Match ? | Cricket
A Timeless test match is cricket match without any time limit. This concept was first introduced in year 1926 when all four tests on Australia's tour of England produced draws and authorities decided to make the fifth and final test match a limitless match. England won the first time less test match by 289 runs at The Oval.
The concept was liked by many and hence goundsmen and machinery improved as pitches were prepared which lastest forever using loam and very heavy rolling.
The idea of timeless test match was to give a decisive result of a test match, mostly the final and decider test match of a series but at Sabina Park in Kingston in Jamica, a timeless test match between England and West Indies had to be ended as draw as the last ship back home to England was leaving and players wanted to catch it after 9 days play. Only second and last drawn timeless test match happened at Kingsmead in Durban for exact same reason and this was enough. Every test match since then has started with a time limit and draws are accepted as third result.
The shortest timeless test match was between Australia and West Indies at Melbourne which ended just in two days.
