5 Most Expensive Liverpool Signings

List of the top five most expensive players singed by Liverpool FC.

5. Robbie Keane £19m
In the summer of 2008 Liverpool paid Tottenham £19m for the services of striker Robbie Keane, making him the second most expensive Liverpool player (at that time), to pair him up with their then most expensive signing Fernando Torres, however the deal couldn't prove to be a success and he was sold back to Tottenham six months later for £12m. The striker managed just five league goals in nineteen league appearances for the club.

4. Stewart Downing £19m
Stewart Downing was singed by Liverpool in the summer of 2011 by Kenny Dalglish from Aston Villa for a fee of £19m, the signings of players such as Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam were made as Liverpool looked to reclaim their place in the top four, however it didn't end that way, as Liverpool finished the season in eighth place. He was sold two years later for a believed to be in the region of £5m.

3. Fernando Torres £21m
Fernando Torres became the most expensive Liverpool signing when Rafa Benitez signed the Spaniard from his boyhood club Atletico Madrid for a fee of £21m (the deal also included the transfer of Luis Garcia to Atletico). Some were skeptical at the time but the Spaniard soon proved why Benitez signed him, his first goal came on his Anfield debut on August 19, 2007 against Chelsea and he never looked back. His strike against Sunderland on 2 February 2007 started a run of eight successive home League matches in which he scored 12 times, including successive hat-tricks against Middlesbrough and West Ham United as well as the winner in his first Merseyside derby. It was a scoring run the like of which hadn't been seen at Anfield since the days of Roger Hunt, certainly not in a player's first full season at the club.

In scoring at White Hart Lane on the final day of the League season, Torres overtook a record previously held by Ruud van Nistelrooy for the most number of League goals scored by a non-British player during his debut season in England's top division. He ended the season with 33 goals to his name. His goal tally for his injury ravaged next two seasons was 17 & 22 respectively. He also became the fastest player to reach fifty goals for Liverpool. He left the club for Stamford Bridge after they lodged a £50m bid on the last day of the January transfer window (2011) after handing in a transfer request. His quip of never having kissed the Liverpool badge left a bitter taste

2. Luis Suarez £23m
Luis Suarez became the most expensive Liverpool player when the Reds paid Ajax £23m for his services, he was bought in to partner Fernando Torres (who left the club the very next day). He was one of Liverpool’s best players during his partial season and helped Liverpool go from twelfth in the league in mid-January to finishing sixth. The Uruguyan currently has 51 goals to his name in 96 appearances and is regarded as one of the most feared players in the Premier League.

1. Andy Carroll £35m
Andy Carroll became Liverpool's most expensive signing ever and the most expensive British player of all times when the Anfield club paid £35m to Newcastle to secure his services. An injury sustained in December delayed his Liverpool debut until March 2011, and he scored his first two goals in April 2011 in a three nil victory over Manchester City. In August 2012, Liverpool agreed a £2 million loan deal that would see Carroll spend a season-long loan at West Ham. The move was made permanent in June 2013 for a fee of £15 million with Liverpool taking a £20m hit. The striker scores six times in 44 appearances for the Reds.
