West Indies Announce Squad For ODI Series| Gayle Axed
West Indies have left out three of their most prolific batsmen Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan from the first two ODI's of the five match series against Pakistan. Spinners Sulieman Benn and Nikita Miller have also been dropped.
Dwayne Bravo, who's World Cup ended early due to an injury returns and would be the vice captain while Darren Sammy remains the captain.
Kieron Pollard will miss the five-match ODI series to play for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, while Bravo will miss the two-match Test series to join Chennai Super Kings.
The WICB said in a statement issued on Thursday that in a bid to help develop young players, the trio has been rested from the first two of the five One Day Internationals.
The move was widely expected as the top West Indian cricketers have failed to perform in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 while serious discipline issues have also marred the general image of the West Indian cricket in the past few years.
"Consistent with the policy to expose young players, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan were not selected," a West Indies Cricket Board release stated.
The West Indies squad includes: Darren Sammy (captain), Dwayne Bravo (vice-captain), Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Kirk Edwards, Anthony Martin, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons, Devon Smith, and Devon Thomas.
